Accessibility Statement

Last updated

Everyone who wants to learn about cannabis should be able to use this site, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, or high-contrast settings.

Our standard

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA across the site. For body text we go further and target AAA contrast (7:1) in both light and dark mode.

What we've done

  • Colour contrast. Every text colour in our light and dark themes is checked against the backgrounds it sits on. Form fields, star ratings, and other controls meet the 3:1 minimum for non-text contrast.
  • Keyboard access. Navigation menus, search, the dark mode toggle, recipe ratings, and comment forms all work with a keyboard, with a visible focus outline. A "Skip to content" link appears on the first press of Tab.
  • Screen readers. Form fields have labels, icon-only buttons have text alternatives, and the dark mode toggle announces its current state.
  • Affiliate links. Links that earn us a commission are marked with a ↗ symbol and announced to screen readers as affiliate links that open in a new tab.
  • Colour isn't the only signal. Recipe star ratings show the difference between filled and empty stars by shape as well as colour.

Known limitations

  • Category chips in dark mode. The small "Edibles" and "Growing" labels reach AA contrast (about 6.7:1) but fall just short of our AAA target. We've accepted this for now because the same information appears in the page text.
  • Image descriptions. The main photo on each post uses the post title as its alternative text rather than describing what's in the picture. We're writing proper descriptions as we revise each post.
  • Third-party content. Comment avatars come from Gravatar and are treated as decorative.
