Decarboxylation (Decarbing)
The heat-driven chemical process that converts inactive cannabinoid acids (THCA, CBDA) into their active forms (THC, CBD). Raw cannabis contains mostly THCA, not THC — and THCA doesn't produce intoxicating effects when eaten. Applying heat removes a carboxyl group from the molecule, releasing CO₂ and producing active cannabinoids. When you smoke cannabis, the flame decarbs it instantly. For edibles, decarboxylation must be done deliberately before infusing. The most common method is baking cannabis at 240°F (115°C) for 40 minutes, though other methods (sous vide, infusion machines) also work.
