First-pass Metabolism

The process by which orally consumed substances are metabolized by the liver before entering systemic circulation. When you eat a cannabis edible, THC travels through the digestive tract to the liver, where it's converted to 11-hydroxy-THC — a metabolite that crosses the blood-brain barrier more efficiently than THC itself. This is why edibles produce a more intense, longer-lasting, and more body-heavy effect than inhaled cannabis, even at the same dose.
